USA Basketball 2020 (2021?)
The path to the gold medal is just getting harder and harder.
Gold. That's the standard. In 1988 we lost against the Soviet Union. NBA players weren't allowed to play, but somehow soviet pros were. Well that changed in 1992, and I remember the Dream Team vividly. As vividly as Pearl Jam or Nirvana or Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". Bill Clinton was running for president, the Simpsons were a phenomenon, and I was saving up for a Super Nintendo.
I digress. Any time I start thinking about USA Basketball, I immediately think about 1992. This is fundamentally unfair. Many of the current players weren't even born yet, and I'm putting them in that category to be judged against. Internationally, there are now many more strong teams. The path to the gold medal is just getting harder and harder.
So should I be more and more impressed every time the USA win gold? Maybe.
